Beautiful handrails with leather wrapping
The result of leather wrapping provides a solid, artisanal, elegant, and exclusive feel with a personal and unique touch. It is equally beautiful in an old manor house and equally striking as a contrast in a modern home with harder material choices. Leather-wrapped railings develop a patina over time and become more and more beautiful with the years.
Vegetable-tanned leather
All leather from Tärnsjö Garveri is vegetable-tanned with natural tannins from bark and completely free from chromium and other chemicals. The tanning process is a craft that requires both experience and time. It produces a naturally beautiful leather that is both environmentally friendly and, with proper care, ages beautifully over a long time to come.
Leather wrapping – a solid craft by experienced saddlers
The craft of leather-wrapping railings is an ancient art that combines precision, patience, a sense of aesthetics, and a deep understanding of leather and its properties. It is a technique that gives a railing both visual beauty and a pleasant feel, making it a focal point in the interior.
The process of wrapping a railing with leather begins with selecting the right type of leather. The leather that is excellent for leather wrapping is our plymå leather 1.1–1.3 mm. The width of the leather straps is adapted to the diameter of the handrail and cut to the correct width, after which the wrapping straps are skived. Skiving the edge of the wrapping strap means thinning the edge of the strap, which allows us to achieve neat joints.
Once the leather is prepared, the wrapping process begins. The leather strap is attached at one end of the railing, and then it is wrapped around the railing at an even pace, so that each turn overlaps the previous one. This requires both patience and skill, as it is important to keep the wrapping even and tight to ensure a good finish and long durability.
